Shelf life and best before dates PDF Print E-mail

Best before dateThere is a common confusion between: “Best Before” and “Use by” that you cannot find a single food item without one of them. Before we explain each of them keep in mind that the date is only an indication of until when the food manufacturer believes the item is good for consumption. If at any time you have doubt that the item tastes or smells strange it is safer to discard it.

“Best Before” date: this is generally used on food items that have a longer life, the date only indicates for how long the food will be at its best quality. You don’t necessarily have to discard the item after this date, just make sure it doesn’t smell, look or taste strange.

“Use by “date: this is used on food items that are considered highly perishable, you must not consume food after its “Use by” date, it can be a health hazard.
